Ausgehend von der historischen Entwicklung des Kirchenpatronats und von den rechtlichen Voraussetzungen des Privatpatronats in Brandenburg während der NS-Zeit werden die Modalitäten des Präsentationsrechts analysiert sowie die state of affairs der Patrone unterschiedlicher Konfession und die Rolle von Frauen im Kirchenpatronat untersucht. Im Zentrum der Betrachtung steht die Haltung brandenburgischer Kirchenpatrone im Kirchenkampf, ausgehend vom Verband der Patrone der Evangelischen Kirchen in der Mark Brandenburg und dessen Vorsitzenden, Detlev von Arnim-Kröchlendorff. Um das Handeln einzelner Patronatsherren in ihren Gemeinden im Kirchenkampf zu verdeutlichen, werden jeweils zwei Persönlichkeiten exemplarisch herausgegriffen, und zwar solche, die deutsch-christliche Pfarrer unterstützten, die dem Konsistorium Geistliche ohne Parteinahme im Kirchenkampf präsentierten oder die sich für Pfarrer der Bekennenden Kirche einsetzten. Den Michaelsbrüdern und der Berneuchener Bewegung, denen eine Sonderrolle zukommt, ist ein eigener Abschnitt gewidmet. Insgesamt zeigt sich, daß Widerstehen im kirchlichen Bereich nicht zwangsläufig mit einer Ablehnung des NS-Staates einherging, während Angehörige des brandenburgischen Adels, die dem politischen Widerstand nahe standen, nicht in allen Fällen Pfarrer der Bekennenden Kirche präsentierten. Die Untersuchung schließt mit einem Ausblick auf das Schicksal brandenburgischer Kirchenpatrone in der Zeit nach 1945.
